A CNN news article states that
nationwide, there are now 477 kids for each guidance
counselor and in California, there are nearly 1,000 kids per
counselor. With education budgets still tight, the
counselors may be stretched even further as are increasingly
less capable of providing all of the educational and
emotional needs.

Based on anecdotal evidence consisting of
emails from many readers, it appears that more application
mishaps occurred this past year than have been previously
experienced. We believe this is partially due to the record
number of college applications that were submitted this past
year and the stress that placed on the admissions offices as
well as some not-so-smooth rollouts of online application
software, mass email programs, and other tech-related
products.

Affirmative action opponents have launched a bid to amend
Michigan's constitution to strip racial preferences from
state college admissions only a few months after the Supreme
Court released a decision, prompted from cases involving
University of Michigan, that upholds affirmative action in
higher education.
An Arizona bill requiring state colleges and universities to accept
woodworking or high school auto shop credits in lieu of fine
arts credits required for college admission was voted down.
