On April 26, 2004, Harvard College released a study that
recommends sweeping changes to its curriculums. Amongst the recommendations the
report makes are:
-
Require students to study or conduct research abroad
-
Educate each Harvard College student in the sciences as
deeply and broadly as they are currently educated in the liberal arts
-
Reduce the number of classes needed to complete a
concentration (major) and delay the concentration declaration to the middle of
the sophomore year from the current freshman year
-
Grow the number of faculty significantly so the average class
size can be reduced
-
Provide enhanced opportunities for students to take classes
in Harvard University's other programs and schools
-
Create a central office to coordinate academic advising
Harvard last made significant changes to its curriculum
about 35 years ago. The rapidly-changing needs of society
(particularly the increased globalization and increased
emphasis on science) are to be addressed in this curriculum
overhaul.
